Omaha Tragedy and Mental Illness

The tragic event that occurred yesterday at the Omaha Westroads Mall, brings to the forefront an issue that no one wants or likes to talk about, Mental Illness. Mental Illness can affect any one, it doesn't discriminate. It's an issue that people need to talk about and recognize the signs so that people don't hurt themselves or innocent victims.

Over the past several years, this issue has been a topic of discussion in my household.  My wife Teresa, Marketing Director with C&A Industries in Omaha was given the task by Larry Courtnage, CEO of C&A Industries and Founder, President of the Kim Foundation to assist in the development of Project Relate.  Here is little about Project Relate from their website:

Project Relate is a public service campaign that strives to break down the stigma and stereotypes associated with mental illness and help the public relate to those who cope with these issues. The project is a joint effort between mental health service providers, advocacy groups, and non-profit organizations across Nebraska - a rare and important partnership.

In addition to speaking out against stigma and providing information about mental illness to the community, Project Relate also aims to provide a clearinghouse of mental health resources across the state of Nebraska. This way, people who suffer from mental illness and their loved ones can easily find the mental health services they need.

On a personal note, Teresa and I would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to all the families and the entire community affected by this senseless event.  Also announced today was that one of the victims was identified by the Omaha World Herald as Beverly Flynn an area REALTOR for 20 plus years with NP Dodge.

Sincerely
